A Message from National President

The 1930’s was a decade of Psi Iota Xi bringing Oxygen Therapy to hospitals. In 1931, Psi Iota Xi donated $10,000 to Riley Hospital for oxygen chambers.  The oxygen chamber at Riley Hospital formally opened on February 29, 1932. Between 1933 and 1936 a total of thirty oxygenaires were placed along with seventeen insuflators throughout hospitals in Indiana and Ohio. The project was completed by 1937 but the number of lives saved lived on for decades.

At the 1938 Convention, the Speech and Hearing clinic was adopted as the new charitable project. The clinic was conducted by Indiana University with the first clinic opening September 19, 1938, in Indianapolis.  Over the next two years the clinic was held in 17 additional locations.

In 1939, Miss Elsie Sweeney, an accomplished musician of Epsilon Chapter, Columbus, IN doubled our gift of $500 to the Symphony Concert Association in the name of the sorority. She promised to do the same for the next two years if we continue to buy at least twenty-seven season tickets to the luncheon held in the Athenaeum proceeding each Friday afternoon concert. I am sure you recognize this was just the beginning of Miss Sweeney’s generosity as her fund continues today to purchase student tickets to different symphonies throughout Indiana.

Our organization grew in the 1930’s by twenty chapters and losing only one, Beta Theta, in 1933. The following chapters were installed in the 1930’s:
